Yaoi and Shounen-ai (Boy's Love)
A Collaborative collection created by k177105
"Yaoi, or Boy's Love (BL), when it first became a genre of writing and manga (and later also of CD, anime and film) in Japan, was typically (if not exclusively) produced and read by girls and mainly reflected female fantasies and understanding about sex, sexuality and relationship, behind which are different dimensions of sexual desire and sexual situations of females. This defines the fundamental character of BL works, from its earliest form as doujinshi (fan works) to its recent form as a developing branch of the cultural industry aiming at girls. Starting from this understanding, there are at least three main questions we can investigate about BL works: what are the female fantasies and desire expressed by them? Why would girls think it good, exciting or even necessary to express their desire and have their desire expressed through fantasies about sex and relationship between men? What are the sexual (sex-organological), social and biological conditions behind those female fantasies and desire taken advantage of by BL industry and developed into an addiction? This collection will try to serve as a platform for probably the first step towards such an investigation into BL. Therefore, it won't include works describing homosexual intimate relationship without mainly involving female sexual desire expressed through fantasies, such as CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, and 120 BEATS PER MINUTE. (The creator of this collection may also review those works in the future, but not following the same way of thinking. The collection containing those works: https://www.criticker.com/films/?filter=e58087) On the other hand, the collection will include both BL anime and films because differences between the two forms don't change the fact that they should be thought about in the same fundamental way: as reflections of female desire."
