Re: Perplexing Reviews
Ok so before it was a book that brought up interesting points and now it's a book that is meant as a joke. I guess the real point is that I would need to read it to really understand it. In a way, you've made my point for me and in a different way that I never would've thought of. Thanks bro A book...

Re: Perplexing Reviews
I didn't mean to say that I thought djross's argument had merit (ironically, I skipped a bit of this thread because it wasn't super interesting to me). Bayard's book has just been on my mind recently, partly because I like the idea that books and movies are vessels for ideas/ethics/philosophy/other ...

Re: Perplexing Reviews
This is an interesting conversation (although I think some of us could stand to be more civil) and I'd like to toss out the name of Pierre Bayard. Pierre Bayard is a French professor of literature. In 2007 he wrote a book called "How To Talk About Books You Haven't Read", which, while bein...

Re: All-time top twenty science fiction movies
As someone who has become a huge fan of science fiction books recently (amusingly, while I have studied science very diligently since I was a child, I didn't get into science fiction until my mid 20s), I think science fiction movies, as a whole, fucking suck. I think there's a tendency to push big-...

Re: "The Martian"
I despised The Martian (the book). Is it worth seeing The Martian (the movie)? How much of the so-called "humour" made it into the adaptation?

Re: How often do you rewatch films?
I never used to rewatch films at all, with a few exceptions: I would rewatch "Blade Runner" anytime it was on, also "Q: The Winged Serpent" and "God Told Me To", a couple of kung-fu flicks ("Drunken Master 2", "Kung-Fu Hustle"), and I would always, a...

Re: Wasted Potential
But in the end, it's a matter of taste. My "Take that back" was just a throwaway comment. Agreed. I was just tossing my opinion into the ring. I didn't mean to come off like an ass. As for what newspaper comic is or isn't "great" or the "best", it's irrelevant to the t...

Re: Wasted Potential
Take that back. I think C & H is a comic strip mainly for adults. It's easily the best comic strip ever. Nothing even comes close. A good comic strip has around 2-3 funny strips per 10 strips. C & H has double that number easily. I can name two better strips off the top of my head: The Far ...

Re: Canvassing opinions on TV series
Congratulations! What type of show is it? It's a sketch show with the structure of a nightly news broadcast. So we'll be doing individual sketches about general political topics (environmental disasters, political gaffes, women in politics) while simultaneously satirizing news broadcasts as a whole...

Re: Canvassing opinions on TV series
A good question, but one that is very difficult to answer. In general, it's hard to say what precisely causes a certain piece of writing to be "good" and another to be "bad", especially in a comedy series. Much like how it's difficult to do the same for a piece of music or paint...
