Re: How do you handle the observer effect ?

The bottom line is[/u]: The number of viewings might have an impact on the film's score . Our film list consists of films seen only once and films seen multiple times. The latter's scores may differ significantly from their score on first viewing. So it's hardly a fair and balanced comparison. It's...

Re: What proportion of your ranked movies are by women?

For what it's worth, I wasn't a big fan of Bridesmaids. I preferred Bachelorette. But, then, that was written and directed by a woman, too, so I win. Among my top 10 directors of the new millennium: Mia Hansen Love (#1) Angela Schanelec Lucretia Martel Claire Denis Not bad. If only it didn't take li...

Re: What proportion of your ranked movies are by women?

6.5%, compared to that list which is about 3.0% of the films on the site. This percentage is higher than most here, as ridiculous as that statement is, because I have made it a point to seek out female directors. There aren't a lot of great female directors, because there aren't a lot of female dire...

Une femme est une femme would be a good one for that list, but a lot gets lost in the translation, so it really helps if you speak French.
Une Americane est une monoligual idiote, unfortunately.

I tend to favor those films that play with language and turn language into a game. Or a weapon. Your mileage may vary. The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant [Safe] My Nights Are More Beautiful Than Your Days L'amour braque A Zed and Two Noughts Force Majeure Before Sunrise/Before Sunset/Before Midnight...

Re: Describe your favourite movie-going experience of your life

Le quattro volte As the film starts, there are 7 of us in the theater on opening night. I know only one other person - a professor of film studies at one of the local universities and one of the chairs of the local Italian Film Festival. I recognized her because she gave a glowing introduction to a ...

Re: On what basis do you rate films ?

yes. things are becoming more binary*. i know which films i will probably like, it's more a case of which kind of film i'm in the mood for, *then a thumbs up/down approach if it satisfies that mood or not. mubi lists were good for this. shit like this . i was hoping letterboxd ran with the mantle, ...

Re: On what basis do you rate films ?

Just out of curiosity, would you be drawn to or repelled by a site that you ranked relevant aspects of filmmaking (acting, directing, editing, cinematography etc.), along with an x factor (entertainment value?) that created a score for you based on the totals? Repulsed to a degree I can't even begi...
