Re: (very) old movies

In my experience, the vast majority of people my age (28) and younger have barely seen and have zero interest in watching "older" movies - as in anything before 1980 (Disney films and a handful of classics aside). When I ask, they tend to be worried most of all that it won't be engaging f...

Pam Grier Bubs appreciation station thread Subscribed. I second Meiko Kaji. Am I really the first one here to mention Dame Judi Dench, Isabella Rossellini, or Emma Thompson? Jesus Christ. I've always been struck by the screen presence of Claudette Colbert, and of Joan Blondell (in her many career p...

Re: Your thoughts on IMAX?

music too loud that it actually pulls me out of the immersion of the movie theatre Yeah you should probably be wearing concert earplugs to regular movies let alone Imax ones. Regular movies frequently go well above 80 dB and these things are usually 2 hours long plus trailers which are always extre...

Re: Orson Welles

I just saw this in its 'completed' form, and although Welles didn't finish it by himself, I wouldn't worry about its fidelity. This is unmistakably Welles' film - you can feel his presence all over it. Not only because it is highly biographical, but it really is fundamentally audacious. Welles appar...

Re: Where can I rent obscure movies?

MUBI is pretty good. Thirding the Library (if you become friends with your A/V acquisitions rep you may be able to get rare DVDs, in addition to Kanopy services). MUBI is also a good resource and they have a rental section now, which flies under the radar. I'm a huge proponent of supporting the off...
