An Interesting Observation about Filmmakers

I guess this is common sense, but while doing the "10 Lowest Ranking Directors", I realized how many awful hack directors and writers actually did something good or at least decent at or near the beginning of their respective careers. Michael Bay, for instance, made "The Rock". Andrzej Bartkowiak made the cool and stylish "Romeo Must Die" in his debut. Both good action films in the "purely entertainment" genre.

This begs the question; did these directors/writers only have one good film in them, or did they lose their motivation and drive, get lazy, and start churning out shit because they were still getting paid a lot of money?

I tend to go with the latter, since those two films above had little in the way of story or ideas, and their quality was wholly tied in to their presentation, directing, and style.
