Hell Or High Water

“Hell Or High Water” (2016) 86%

If you haven’t seen “Hell Or High Water” then you haven’t seen one of the best films of 2016. A neo-Western crime thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. With great acting performances and killer bank robbing scenes. The writing in the movie is really good, especially in the third act. “Hell Or High Water” has a very good screenplay and great performances from Chris Pine and Jeff Bridges.

Taylor Sheridan (writer of “Sicario”) wrote the screenplay and I think he did a very good job. First titled “Comancheria”, then later changed to “Hell Or High Water”. The film follows two brothers who carry out a series of bank robberies to save their family ranch, while being persued by two Texas Rangers. One of the Texas Rangers is played by Jeff Bridges in an Oscar worthy performance.

Bridges is great as usual, another great movie to add to his long career. Bridges’ doesn’t let up and brings experience to the screen. He’s not only funny at times but also heartfelt. Using his age to create his character and he’s very believable. Nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards, Bridges’ once again delivers a fine performance.

Chris Pine and Ben Foster play the brothers that rob banks. Chris Pines’ performance is especially good. Violent and intense you really get to see another side of Pine not seen in other movies he has done. He plays the brother you really sympathize with while Fosters’ character is just flat out crazy. Both brothers are well cast, but Pine being my favorite of the two.

This film takes place in West Texas, the same place the story of “No Country For Old Men”(2007) takes place. I think there are many similarities between “No Country” and “Hell Or High Water”. The locations, how the characters look and the violence. It kind of feels like a Coen Bros. film, but not quite. The auteur style of the Coens is not there. Director David Mackenzie still does a good job.

“Hell Or High Water” has great performances, good writing and directing. Jeff Briges’ is the performance to watch out for and the writing by Taylor Sheridan is key. The bank robbing scenes are action packed and full of adrenaline. A modern day heist movie with one of the best screenplays written of the year. “Hell Or High Water” could be my favorite film of 2016.
