Shrek 2 (2004)

The sequel to 2001's confoundingly popular Shrek, Dreamwork's Shrek 2 is simply more of the same. If you enjoyed the first film's endless amount of crude juvenile humor, annoying pop culture references, and Eddie Murphy, than you'll probably like the sequel too. But for those that found Shrek to be tiresome, obnoxious, and a little boring, this isn't likely to ignite any conversions.

After winning the hand of Princess Fiona in the first film, Shrek is now beginning to enjoy married life. But shorty after their honeymoon, Shrek and Fiona are summoned to the palace at Far Far Away to meet the King and Queen and received their blessing. Unfortunately, neither the King nor Queen is aware that Shrek and Fiona are both ogres, which causes significant problems.

Everything that was true of the first Shrek film is largely true here, except there are less laughs to be had on this second visit to the swamps (impressive considering the scarcity of successful humor in the first installment). The humor ranges from obvious, to scatological, to uninspired cultural winks. This is a dull and unengaging sequel that's a start-to-finish chore.

Mike Meyers and Cameron Diaz are unremarkable in undemanding roles as Shrek and Fiona respectively. Eddie Murphy is borderline insufferable as Donkey, though it's hard to fault Murphy too much for this one, as his teeth-grinding performance is a requirement of the character. Supporting cast John Cleese, Julie Andrews, and Jennifer Saunders are good enough to make one wish they were part of a better film.

Shrek 2 is unfunny, uninteresting, and eye-rollingly childish. Even the visuals are ugly and rubbery. The best things I can say about Shrek 2 is that I laughed three times and it's only 92 minutes long (nearly 10 of which are occupied by the end credits). Shockingly, Shrek 2 grossed nearly 1 billion dollars at the box office, and was nominated for two Oscars. This may be just one man's opinion, but Shrek 2 is ogre-rated.

Score: 3/10
