and if you enjoy older westerns at all, High Noon and 7 Men from Now are both excellent.

Wow, thanks. I had heard all about Unforgiven, The Professionals (I even starred your review of it), and High Noon, but not The Great Silence and 7 Men from Now. Added!

Yeah, I have been looking forward to that one ever since watching Scorsese pimp it on his "Journey through American Films" documentary/review series. Should probably check out "Stagecoach", possibly the first good Western, too.

Re: Once Upon a Time in the West

looking at your rankings list filtered to westerns, may I also suggest that you should make an effort to see a few others?

Specifically:

The Professionals (Lee Marvin, Jack Palance, Burt Lancaster and Claudia Cardinale)
The Great Silence (Klaus Kinski, Jean Louis Trintignant, Vonetta McGee)
The Unforgiven (Eastwood, Freeman, Hackman)

and if you enjoy older westerns at all, High Noon and 7 Men from Now are both excellent.

These are IMO some of the essentials of the genre if you're looking to see more :)

TheDenizen wrote:It gets my vote as Sergio Leone's masterpiece, and IMO is the second best western ever made.

ie, yes it's badass.

Oh? Which one do you consider the best, TheDenizen?

Yeah, I came into "Once Upon a Time in the West" with impossibly high expectations, and it absolutely met all of them. I consider it the greatest Western ever, Leone's greatest masterpiece, in addition to having a bunch of outstanding, unforgettable characters.

Jason Robards is outstanding as Cheyenne, Charlie Bronson is phenomenal as Harmonica, but Henry Fonda practically steals the show with his cold-blooded killer Frank, one of the greatest villains ever. Oh, and while I didn't write it in my review, Claudia Cardinale was ridiculously hot. (And a good actress, too)
