Indeed, the film contains many such scenes, whether it's Mario seducing a large black woman, Luigi's embarrassingly earnest playground insults, "de-evolution", and my favorite, a politician being turned into a monkey (an improvement in both moral character and intelligence). In addition, you have legitimately good actors like Hoskins, Leguizamo, and Hopper all hamming it up like crazy. Again, if you view the film even remotely seriously, or compare it to the video game, you will hate it, as I first did.

But judged as a piece of fluff? I personally liked it.

I view it through the same lens now as I would a 70's blaxploitation or giallo flick.

Re: Super Mario Bros. (1993)

I will let my mini-review of this picture speak for itself;

"When I watched this as an 8 year-old, I hated the film because it was so different than the video game. When I re-watched it at 15, I discovered a funny, fast-paced, entertaining film with excellent performances by Dennis Hopper, John Leguizamo, Bob Hoskins, and Samantha Mathis. JUDGED ON ITS OWN MERITS, "Super Mario Bros." is perfectly worthy, light-hearted entertainment. Just forget about the freaking video game first."

I know it's fashionable to hate certain movies, but in the case of Super Mario Brothers, it's the least justified when judged on its own merits.
