I'm conflicted by this film. The lead, John Dujardin, is the perfect computer morph of Errol Flynn, Gene Kelly and Rudolph Valinteno, and given the casting of Berenice Bejo as Pepper, and Uggie as the dog (a Jack Russel, ergo a shoe in), how can it go wrong. Perhaps the plot is a little staid. I wondered after it was over what it would have been like without the dog. Like The Adventures of Tintin, the dog is a scene stealer.

Some really innovative stuff, but I think the critical acclaim is mainly because of the gimmicks--silent films vs. talkies, the ooh what good acting without sound schtick.
