A lot of actors that go into directing I don't believe ever attended film school. And I think there are other cases of someone with no film school become a special effects guy or animator or editor for years and then getting a chance to direct like Hal Ashby. And maybe a few theater people like Rob Marshall who was a stage director and did choreography in films before directing the Chicago movie, although I can't say for sure if Marshall didn't attend film school maybe he did attend film school for all I know.
Off the top of my head, the only case I can think of where someone with no school or related experience making it is Quentin Tarantino who's pretty well known for being a high school drop out, he financed Reservoir dogs with the money he got for selling the True Romance screenplay. I'm sure there are others though especially if you go back in time.
