Number of instances in which I've rated a work a 95 or higher:
1920–1929: 1
1930–1939: 2
1940–1949: 2
1950–1959: 4
1960–1969: 11
1970–1970: 17
1980–1989: 9
1990–1999: 5
2000–2009: 10
2010–2015: 5
Granted, I haven't seen nearly as many movies between 1920 and 1950 as I've seen between 1960-Present, so that's undeniably a factor. And while the 1970s were clearly stronger than most other decades, a lot of that seems to be a result of a guy named Ingmar Bergman.
So, unlike the rest of y'all, I'm not worried about the demise of cinema. Every year I see wonderful movies. If anything, I think movies are better than ever (with the caveat that, yes, blockbusters, sequels, and superhero movies are a significant problem).
I'm wondering if the so called "trend" that has been theorized in this thread by many has less to do with a catastrophic decline in the quality of cinema and more to do with cynics getting older or grumpier or both.
