Re: Darren Aronofsky's Next Project

Personally, I loved Requiem for a Dream. It's in my top 5 of the decade, and is my favorite Aronofsky film (although the others aren't far behind: The Fountain, Black Swan, and The Wrestler are also in my 10th tier. The only one that isn't is Pi, which I didn't think was great it's in my 6th tier). I certainly did not see the movie and say, "Wow. I shouldn't do drugs". I already had made up my mind about that, and I don't think someone should take that kind of advice from a movie anyways. I think Darren even mentioned this in a interview, that this movie is not just about drugs, but the idea that there a lot more things that can be considered drugs than we realize (afterall Ellen Burstyn's character was addicted to diet pills). There are a few reasons why I loved this film:
1. Ellen Burstyn is great. One of the best performances by an actress I've ever seen. Her monologue, her character, her descent into madness; all of it is great.
2. I also think the film is very technically brilliant. I would hope that even if you didn't like the film, that you could at least say that Darren Aronofsky knows his film technique. I mean he effectively uses split screen, extreme close ups, and other techniques. I also love how the film was cut. The use of rapid cuts is one of the most unique film styles I've seen.
3. Clint Mansell's score. One of the best scores I've ever heard. The score totally fits the mood. As the movie progresses, the score becomes more and more panicked as things start to spiral out of control.
4. The ending is great at least IMO. I liked how we saw how everyone ended up, but I especially loved the very end where Ellen Burstyn
imagines that she is actually on the game show and Jared Leto is there and is actually doing something with his life
. It's a very subtle, soft-spoken, for lack of a better term, ending, but it gets the point across about how life might have been without the addictions.

I'm sure these won't be good enough reasons for some, but these are the reasons I love this film.
