1990s romantic drama, Michelle Pfeiffer?

So this movie made a bit of an impression on me, probably because I was young and it dealt with some heavy themes.

The most clear points are that it was not really a comedy, more of a drama, romantic, dealing with kind of a working class white woman in the city (East Coast, Midwest, not West coast or south or southwest), maybe New York, Boston or Chicago.

The actors I think were Michelle Pfeiffer and some rough, manly guy (maybe Al Pacino, but could of been Robert DeNiro, John Travolta, you get the idea). This would point me to "Frankie and Johnny", but I don't think that's it, although I should probably watch it to make sure... but it doesn't have some of the key points I remember.

Turns out the rough-looking guy has a soft heart and he is interested in the woman. The scenes I remember are: the woman shopping for groceries with a shopping basket and our hero guy tries to talk to her and she kind of shies away. I think she is not as covered up as when she is working and when he gets close he notices bruises on her arms (and/or neck) showing that her boyfriend hits her sometimes. I think he convinces her on a date, or somehow they end up in his apartment, which is a city apartment upstairs (brick building?). He is lying on the bed and he gets her to undress and she stands naked with her back to the camera and he looks at her body, convincing her that she is beautiful.

I thought maybe she was working as a waitress (also points to "Frankie and Johnny") but I thought he was a customer, not a cook, although I can't remember all those details.

It could have been the 1980s and it might not have been Michelle Pfeiffer... someone similar and popular around the same time. The actress was white, not overweight, lighter hair, hair not too long, good working-class portrayal.

I don't know if any actual abuse was portrayed although I think there was some intense yelling.

Appreciate all the help. Would like to see this again. Only saw it once and maybe not even the full thing because I was young.
