You're thinking of the sequel, which actually managed to be even worse. The original was directed by Brian de Palma.
The most interesting thing about Mission Impossible is that they altered the iconic theme tune, which spawned a really cool, unexpected discussion on an episode of Penn's Sunday School. That's literally the first thing that pops into my head when I remember the picture.
