Normally I have more mainstream taste with 3-4 "popular" films in my top 5, but this year it's a bit eclectic. It's been an incredibly strong year for movies in my estimation. I'll skip Director since I'd probably just nominate the directors above.

To echo what somebody else said, what a great year for female performances. Normally I'm left with the feeling that the actress races pales in comparison to the actor race, but this year the reverse is true. I haven't seen Blue is the Warmest Color.

I haven't seen All is Lost.

Not sure I care all that much about the Supporting categories, but I'd probably say my favorites off the top of my head were Sam Rockwell in The Way Way Back and Sally Hawkins in Blue Jasmine. Daniel Bruhl was also great in Rush.

Both The Great Beauty and Gravity swallowed me up in terms of being completely transfixed on the screen at certain times. I remember when the credits start rolling on Gravity and I became cognizant that my mouth was open and probably had been open for a while.

For screenplay, American Hustle, Blue Jasmine, and Frances Ha would probably be my nominees. How about sneaking This Is the End in there too?

I normally have seen a few more documentaries by this point, but my preference among the few would be Blackfish over Stories We Tell and The Act of Killing. The latter two felt a bit put on, whereas Blackfish was heartfelt. Still need to see The Square and 20 Feet from Stardom.

Finally....most disappointing (versus expectations)

I rarely watch poorly reviewed movies, so perhaps others will have better lists. Maybe a little unfair to have Pacific Rim in there, but I expected a lot more. A Good Day to Die Hard...I've enjoyed pretty much all of the Die Hard movies so far. 4 films, all of them ranging from good to great action movies. This one was just terrible, though. From page to screen it was a terrible idea. Gangster Squad another disaster. I am probably one of the biggest Malick fans on the planet, but To the Wonder just did very very little for me.
