It might be the only movie that actually gives me the sense that i'm reading a book rather than watching a movie, i don't know how else to describe it. I thought Nicole Kidman was great in the movie and I wouldn't be surprised if she claimed to never work with Lars again. He is infamous for his obscure personality and many phobias, I even read that he would insist on walking around the set completely nude while filming.

I can see why a lot of people would hate Melancholia, it seems to be an extremely personal film. I see it as a movie that aims to capture a very specific emotion (somewhere in the realm of depression) that not a lot of people might have felt.

Yes, and intentionally making a movie with the prime objective of eliciting depression or extreme melancholy (not just examining it), I'll never understand.

i dunno, maybe because he has experienced depression and wanted others to understand what it was like for him?

i mean, it's not hard to come up with a reason.

anyway, lars von trier is the greatest director of all time. just sayin'.

Dogville

Does anyone have any strong opinions about this one way or the other? I just watched it and besides it being long (3 hr.) and infuriating through most of it due to all of the character's stupidity, I loved the ending--so much so I'm surprised I hadn't heard Nicole Kidman's exceedingly quotable line. I'm no Lars von Trier fan at all, in fact I gave Melancholia one of my 4 zeros, Nicole is quoted as saying she won't work with him again. I need to call tomorrow and get some insurance for my wife's Hummel collection. 7/10
