Re: I got around to watching The Night of the Hunter

Charles Laughton's sole directorial outing was quite impressive, along with director of photography Stanley Cortez. They teamed up to create one of the creepiest black and white studies on predation, with really simple, spare sets and moody, angular lighting, creating a claustrobic atmosphere of dread. And as you mentioned, Dom, the nighttime shooting is fantastic and makes you feel like it's closing in on you.

Shelly Winters's last prayer is a creepy thing, as well as Mitchum suddenly grabbing the kid and threatening to cut him like a pig - something you wouldn't see in film today, I reckon.

In a recent post I mentioned Mitchum and Lillian Gish singing to each other and how unbelievably spooky that scene is - totally goose-bumpy. I don't know the song, but it crosses my mind occasionally, and if you've seen it, you know how ominously catchy it is. The movie's most memorable shot - looking through the main window - of Gish sitting with the rifle on her lap, is an image that will always be with me, reinforced by lighting that I wish I could describe how creepy it is.

I'm not a kid fan but the boy and girl in this are great - totally natural. I liked the girl's naive questions in the face of grave peril.
