i think dats bcoz of my own background-i come from a society where, while i was growing up, if we saw "godfather" we were looked as sumthing like Gods! i grew up in a very rural place in one of most impoverished states in India where we did not get satellite channel till 1991, english movie channels (star movies) till 1995 or sumthing and english movies were shown in theatres only if dey were blockbusters like "jurassic park" or "titanic"-in fact come to think of it, dese were de only 2 english movies i saw in my whole school life in a theatre!But thanks to my parents, who have always been very progressive and not letting de place we live in let be a barrier in our eductaion, dey always told us stories from various movies dey saw-i remember my dad going on business trips to Indian metro cities like Bombay and Delhi (where they showed more english movies dan in our hometown from 1990 onwards!) and he wud come back nd tell us stories of movies like Independence Day, Children of the Corn, JFK, The Last Emperor...
Now I am settled in Bombay and we have all channels here, big video rental stores, many film clubs and film festivals and we see many movies in many languages and so I am not going to talk about movies like casablanca, roman holiday, titanic, godfather, rambo etc. which are great-but which are of course very popular but movies which truly need to be seen by someone who has never been exposed to them-
