Bakemono no Ko "The Boy and the Beast"

I really liked Bakemono no Ko even though I felt it would have been much better as a multi episode OVA. As a movie it drags a bit while at the same time it seems to skim over interesting and important things. The main three parts of the film are great but the film fails to connect them well. The first part about the young boy going to the land of the beasts and finding his place is the best. The second half concentrating on his budding relationship with a girl, father and himself was nice but felt rushed and didn't go into as much detail as I felt it needed. The ending was heartfelt and exciting but once again it felt rushed and lacked the lead up to make it the magnificent finale it wanted to be. All of the downside that I mentioned here stem from the fact that the movie, even at 2 hours, was much too short to properly handle the story and as a result all of the side characters don't get the proper attention they need to become fully felshed out people/beasts. The beast and humans in the story needed more depth instead of just getting a sum up of their stories, feelings, and situations. Overall I think that this was a great movie that is a must see to show people who both like and dislike "anime". It's not as good as Studio Ghibli or Satoshi Kon's work but Mamoru Hosoda joins Makoto Shinkai as one of the premier up and coming go to Japanese animators for great feature films.
