Re: What is the last film you watched?

i think this thread is a good idea actually, we can post more about films than there's room for in the mini reviews, and have some discussion. last nite i saw

Touch of Evil (1958)

A film noir directed by Orson Welles, starring Welles, Charlton Heston and the hot Janet Leigh. It played out differently than other noirs I've seen, and that's because this is first and foremost a Welles movie, and it shows. His trademark cinematography and direction, and his character's relation to Heston's, are what drive the film and make it really special in look and feel.

Yet Touch of Evil is not without its flaws, primarily technical. Marlene Dietrich is never seen in the same shot as Welles, that kinda bugged me. Also, all the voices are dubbed. The current version is reconstructed following Welles' wishes, but it still bears the mark of studio tampering. One long scene the studio had cut involved the Night Man, a role that could've been cool but wasn't played very convincingly by Dennis Weaver. And overall, the story could've used some adjustments.

Despite its imperfections, this was a very charming movie, and at the end I was left wanting to see it again, or at least certain parts. It's like a rough diamond. 85
