Re: Canvassing opinions on TV series

The Sopranos - my favorite show. Gandolfini & Falco are consistently brilliant, although Lorraine Bracco's overpraised. First season is almost perfect, then steadily gets less so. The last season was very hit and miss, with the coma and the finale being great, while the gay mobster on the run in New England subplot was absolutely terrible. Paulie should have got his own spinoff.

The Wire - enjoyed it but didn't think it was the "show to end all shows" that it's cracked up to be. Really liked Idris Elba's arc, the Hamsterdam issue, as well as the Carcetti for mayor plot, you can draw so many real life analogies...

Breaking Bad - very entertaining. However I'm partway through the fifth season and it's lost some serious steam after the finale of the last one.

Boardwalk Empire - never really got into it fully. Buscemi should be amazing but he just left me cold, will try it again in the future.

Mad Men - for the longest time didn't like it, thought it was just too soap-opera-y and didn't have sympathy for Draper's character. Then I watched the latest season and my opinion flipped, goddamn that was a good run of television.

Deadwood - second favorite show, purely because of Ian motherfucking McShane. It would be a good show otherwise but he just elevates it into something else, and for that is one of my favorite actors. Plus that big fight with the
eye-gouge
is the most I've ever been invested in fictional combat.

Twin Peaks - 60% filler/people trying to imitate Lynch, 40% fascinating. Goes without saying everything in the Black Lodge goes in the latter.

Game of Thrones - hypeworthy. Am I the only person who wants to see the Lannisters win? Eagerly anticipating the next season.

Dexter - entertaining but gimmicky. Stopped watching at the end of the second season because I thought it was just going to be a series of diminishing returns.

Haven't seen but am looking to get into one day: BSG, Treme, Carnivale

Would also recommend: Generation Kill, Charlie Brooker's Dead Set & Black Mirror, The Thick of It, League of Gentlemen, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, anything by David Attenborough, Michael Palin or Adam Curtis

Finally I know everyone doesn't talk about it anymore because it became a bad joke, but the first two seasons of 24 are still great and some of the most addictive television ever made. I like to think the series ended with the season two finale and
Palmer actually got killed by that assassin.
