Well, I haven't seen a lot of work from either director, really (other than Zhang Yimou's subsequent Martial arts/period dramas) but the presence of Zhang Ziyi certainly may have swayed my view of both Hero and CTHD ;) I loved the fight between Donnie Yen and Jet Li in Hero's Go parlor,

That was actually the single most disappointing scene in Hero for me. Donnie Yen and Jet Li were always my two favorite martial arts actors, and FINALLY, they would have a fight on screen! I was incredibly excited and hyped up to watch it in Hero.

And then...boredom. Instead of utilizing any of their amazing, unique skills, it's typical wire-work, wuxia, undercranking (shooting a scene at 18 fps and playing it through at 22 fps...loses the sensation of impact from the blows) bullshit. Good God was I disappointed.

Making a fight scene between Jet Li and Donnie Yen lame is like making a nude lesbian scene between Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard unsexy.

and thought that Zhang Ziyi's teahouse fight and duel with Michelle Yeoh in CTHD were great.

I really hate Zhang Ziyi; no martial arts acting ability, and she's not even hot. A friend and I were always speculating what big-time movie executive/businessman/Triad boss she must be dating to keep getting cast in all these top-tier films while more talented AND pretty Asian actresses were passed over.

Why can't more Asian actresses be like the luscious Maggie Cheung?

You're not the first person to recommend that series to me. Samurai Champloo definitely sounds like it's worth checking out.

It's really incredible. The perfect television series of any kind, in my view.

oh also, thanks for your input on our TCI scores...

Yeah dude, this is an excellent topic; thanks for creating it.

It really gives me an opportunity to see which movies I have missed out on so far, and talk about those that I have watched.

theficionado wrote:Denizen, I would suggest some Johnny To. Fulltime Killer is on Shogun's list, but Exiled is fantastic, too. I'm also surprised by the lack of the rest of the Man with No Name trilogy.
One essential action titles I missed is Assault on Precinct 13 (the original), and some other newer fare includes Collateral, Hot Fuzz, Apocalypto.
EDIT: Oh, and The Good, the Bad, the Weird! Most fun I've had in a theatre in forever!

For all the Triad/Cops movies I've seen, somehow the only Johnny To flick I've watched is Heroic Trio  I'll definitely add those two to my list, thanks.

Hot Fuzz, Apocalypto, TGTBATW and the other films in the Man With No Name series are all ranked pretty high, but not quite high enough to edge onto the list. Collateral was just good I thought, but I've not seen either version of Assault on Precinct 13  I'm quite fond of Carpenter from that era, I dunno why I've never seen it.

Yeah I remember watching it as a straight action movie back when it came out and it failed to impress, I may revisit it at some point :P

Certainly both films were paced slower than a lot of martial arts films but I wasn't really put off by the stuff that a lot of the complaints were about.

ShogunRua wrote:I think your list has the better kung-fu films overall; there are quite a few classics on there that I haven't watched yet, most embarrassingly "Eight Diagrams Pole Fighter".

oh, dude, classic. Well worth hunting down a copy, even if it's a shitty dubbed one. Your list has plenty of very worthy inclusions like The Victim (a lot of people's pick for Sammo Hung's best), Dragon Inn, Mr Vampire, Master of the Flying Guillotine (certainly Wang Yu's best movie), Tai Chi Master...these are all great flicks.

ShogunRua wrote:By the way, if you liked the "Cowboy Bebop" series, check out "Samurai Champloo" by the same director/writer...it's even better.
