I'm starting to wonder if critics are collectively jumping on Woody Allen's more recent movies only because he doesn't stray off the beaten path and everyone is hyper-familiar with his style.

Just the opposite, it's a complete departure from his style, including a noticeable reduction of humor, and nothing about being centered on him as is so often the case. Owen Wilson in Midnight in Paris was an Allen stand-in, mannerisms and all.

He's had his fair share of duds, maybe even more than usual for the past 2 or so decades, but I still think he's been more or less consistently great.

Did you see Magic in the Moonlight? Terrible, mabye his worst, just before this, his best, of what I've seen IMHO.

Also, I've noticed you've seen barely any of his movies (I looked at your ranked films), so you should probably get on that, especially if you like it when he unleashes his inner Kierkegaard. At the very least, check out Crimes and Misdemeanors and Husbands and Wives. And since you like Midnight in Paris, give the Purple Rose of Cairo a look.

Yeah I've seen a lot I haven't ranked which often happens with my mediocre movies I saw before joining Criticker; and I haven't seen Crimes and Misdemeanors or The Purple Rose of Cairo, which I will endeavor to correct for the latter anyway. I'm not particularly fond of Martin Landau, and the C&R plot sounds pretty typical. That's what I liked the most about this movie, the story was really different--though I appear to be in a minority there.
