A "proper one"? That would include all the other Greengrass precursors, which are good, even great, but not as great as Legacy inMYnevertobehumbleopinion. That they excluded Aaron Cross is pure petulance, and maybe politics, as is obvious, and it may well translate into a degraded effort--though I hope not.

Blockbusters 2016 -- your must-sees?

Must see for me:

X-Men: Apocalypse -- Without Patrick Stewart, without Ian McKellan, and without Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, the casting does not look promising. Don't get me wrong, Fassbender nearly matches McKellan's level as Magneto, but there doesn't seem to be anyone else on that level in the major roles. Maybe Days of Future Past was as good as it gets in terms of getting as many of my favourite actors (for these roles) into one film as possible. Even the villain was at least played by Peter Dinklage.

Jason Bourne -- A proper one, finally(!), directed by Paul Greengrass, and starring Matt Damon just like old times. I've been looking for another director who delivers sheer cinematic intensity with the immersiveness & pace of Paul Greengrass and still haven't found one.

Ghostbusters -- I love the original concept, TV show, action figures and theme song. Unfortunately did not care for the casting for the original movie. Apparently I'm one of very few people on the planet (let alone this website) who doesn't really care for Bill Murray (or Dan Ackroyd), so I'm very glad to see this franchise rebooted with actors like Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig whose comedic styles I actually find funny (plus Michael Kenneth Williams and Andy Garcia don't hurt either). Also glad they updated/remixed the theme song to make it even better, if the short clip in the trailer is anything to go by.

Star Wars: Rogue One -- Cast looks much better than Star Wars 7, with Mads Mikkelsen, Forest Whitaker, and Donnie Yen.

Independence Day: Resurgence -- I loved the original. And given that it made some obscene amount of money, I wonder why it took so long to make a sequel? Anyway, better late than never. Kind of disappointed Will Smith chose Suicide Squad over this project. At least Jeff Goldblum will be there though.

Ice Age 5 -- Didn't see the fourth one yet so will need to catch up. But the artwork in these films is always spectacular, as is the sound and voice acting, imo.

Captain America: Civil War -- Not a huge fan of Captain America, and definitely not a fan of Iron Man (or Thor, or Black Widow), but Winter Soldier was so much better than I expected that now I'm curious about how good these Avengers films can get with a plot that's actually compelling.

Probably also will see

Deepwater Horizon, Patriots Day -- not sure if these will get released this year, or if they're even going to be blockbusters, but they're interesting stories starring Mark Wahlberg so I'll probably watch them both.

Star Trek Beyond -- not a huge fan of the current casting or storylines, but the production design, art department, sound and visual effects are always top notch so I'll at least watch it for that.

Deliberate omissions

Suicide Squad -- Trailer looks lame

Doctor Strange -- Benedict Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton are both actors I actively avoid. I hear some people like them, but their style of acting really rubs me the wrong way. There's still an outside chance that I'll watch it on the small screen but if this ends up having the Focus Features logo at the beginning (which, given the casting, would not surprise me) I'd likely just turn it off. Expecting a bomb on the level of Elektra with Jennifer Garner.

Too bad there's no Fast and the Furious this year, as Furious 7 was so much fun.

Anyway let's discuss big, bright, loud, colorful, spectacular blockbuster films and franchises being released in 2016 that appeal to the masses.
