Re: Steven Spielberg

I've seen 11 Spielberg films, and while I don't consider him one of my favorite directors, I do not seem to share the hatred (maybe that's putting it too harsh) that others seem to have for him. His average for 11 films is 75. 2 of his films are in my Tier 10, 1 is in my Tier 9, and 2 are in my Tier 8. The rest are what I'd call average or below average.
Tier 10:
Schindler's List- 93- I'd like to think that even those people that can't stand Spielberg would at least consider this one of his best (unless of course you are a Anti-semite or Holocaust denier). It really is a wonderful and heartfelt story, both tragic but at the same time hopeful. It has a great score by John Williams, and a pair of great performances by Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes (to this day I consider Fiennes' portrayal of Amon Goth as one of the best villainous performances I've ever seen). And I felt the film was shot beautifully.

Jurassic Park- 92- This one I am not surprised that it is not more well received. My love for this film can mostly be attributed to that nostalgia you described earlier. When I was younger, I was obsessed with dinosaurs, perhaps that is why I liked this film so much, or maybe this film is why I became obsessed with dinosaurs. Either way, I still enjoy watching this film today despite no longer being obsessed with dinosaurs. For some reason, I really liked Richard Attenborough's character.

Tier 9
Jaws-85- I liked this one for much of the same reasons as Jurassic Park; it has good action in it, and the movie gets better as it moves on. I didn't really like this one as much as Jurassic Park, probably because I found Dinosaurs more interesting than a shark, and outside of the principal cast, I found the acting to be quite poor and annoying.

Tier 8
Munich-82- I found this tale of revenge interesting. It was nothing amazing, but it is interesting enough, and Eric Bana gives quite a pretty good performance, especially in the end as a paranoid ex-Mossad agent.

Catch Me if you Can-79- Again nothing amazing, but it was quite entertaining watching Hanks and DiCaprio in their cat and mouse game. And it also has Christopher Walken. It can be quite funny at times, but also very serious. Hanks gets so close, and DiCaprio always gets away.

Opposite Side of the Spectrum:
Tier Two:
Close Encounters of the Third Kind-50- I just really found this film boring. In fact I didn't even see this that long ago, and the only thing I can really remember is that Dreyfuss has an extraterrestrial experience and goes apeshit, so irrationally apeshit that he builds a huge model of the "meeting place" in the middle of his house. Eventually, the aliens show up at this meeting place and communicate with humans through musical tones (why? I have no idea).
