Jaws

There are not enough words in the English language for me to describe how good this movie is.

One of the genius moves in this film is that Steven Spielberg keeps the shark out of the camera's view for about 3/4's of the movie. You'd think that this was a stupid mistake, but it's what makes the movie so good. By not showing the shark, we postpone the thrill. When suspense is built during a movie, it's let out when "that scene" happens. "That scene", in this film, is the revelation of the shark. The idea to keep the shark off camera for most of the movie keeps the suspense going that much longer.

"Jaws" is not about killing the shark. "Jaws" is about the journey leading up to that final confrontation. Some might describe it as slow, but that's only if you're waiting for the confrontation. If you sit back and just take in the story about the three men out on see, then you really begin to see how much of a masterpiece this film is. You begin to feel as though you are on the boat with Chief Brody, Hooper, and Quint. The best scene in this movie, as well as in any movie in my opinion, is the nigh where they get drunk and show each other their scars. It starts out funny, but then gets dead serious once Quint gives his monologue about the "U.S.S. Indianapolis". It's a chilling monologue, and my favorite monologue of all time.

"Jaws", as I said before, would be nothing without its cast of characters. The supporting cast is good, but it's no doubt that the best characters are the three leading characters, Martin Brody, Matt Hooper, and Quint. Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw give outstanding performances as their respective characters. To me, they ARE their characters. They are not acting.

"Jaws" is my #1 favorite movie of all time, and I don't think that will ever change. It's a movie that gets better with each viewing, and is truly better than the sum of its parts.
