It doesn't help that my registered party are a bunch of idiots, whose policies scare me to death. They all think they want another Ronald Reagan, but forget Reagan was the one who signed the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act. They think Christianity is under attack while (Cain, Cain, Cain) refusing to acknowledge the bigotry in their treatment of Islam. You thought Bush was a bad public speaker: see Rick Perry. Mitt Romney is the kind of Used Car Salesman who will sell you a cheap lemon and not tell you about the interest rate on your Backruptcy OK Car Loan: his stated records on gun control, immigration and abortion tell you he's the kind of guy who will change his mind at will (of lobbyists and funders), talk out of his ass and shit out of his mouth. Bachmann could use some truth serum. In this intellectual vacuum Paul's theories actually make sense, but he doesn't have a chance in hell of being elected with the chronic lack of media attention and policies that alienate "necessary" political backers.

You leave Newt out on purpose? I'm beginning to wonder if he isn't the most viable candidate the Republican Party's had since Reagan (and I'd like a Reagan, I'm sure he'd come around on immigration, nobody's perfect). Newt's the smartest guy in either room, he'd pulverize Obama in a debate, and he's the one who's remained focused on the prize, finding the best candidate to replace Obama. It was him who said in the first (I think) debate that any of the Rep. candidates would be much better than Obama. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamen!

And George Clooney is a pompous ass.

???? Not disagreeing, but you might elaborate.

Re: 2012 US Presidential Elections

I leave a film forum for a week and come back to an old fashioned political throwdown? Cool. :D

Here's my take, as an unashamed moderate Republican living in not-very-sunny Southern California at and near a college campus.

Obama rode a wave of populist malaise into office but failed as president to achieve much of his agenda, even BEFORE an all-Republican house. (Increase minimum wage to $9.50, Windfall Profits Tax for Oil conglomorates, good ole Cap and Trade - even his promise to begin sending people to the moon by 2020. NASA is as real now as it was in Michael Bay's Armageeddon). If anything, he alienated many of his previous supporters through his backhanded support of the banking system (which, I'll admit, was being kicked downhill before he entered office), while not doing much of anything for groups that loved him to death - like LGBT and Latinos. Although he does ironically love the NRA.

So, basically, whatever he accomplishes seems like too little too late, and he's lost his core ground-up support. These self-starters with no capital are the ones taking to the streets right now.

It doesn't help that my registered party are a bunch of idiots, whose policies scare me to death. They all think they want another Ronald Reagan, but forget Reagan was the one who signed the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act. I think it was the second or third post here, where Pickpocket mentioned the only thing that you can do is not vote, and he's right. In a sick way, people I think want a disaster film to wipe the slate clean and start again - Occupy and the Tea Party are both statements of desperation and moral/political uncertainty. Hell, I can't find a full-time job either, and my student loans are well above the national average (by 4 times, last account, which was accompanied by half a bottle of scotch and quite a bit of weeping). Our culture preaches that everyone's right and no one's wrong, but the slow reveal of our reality is that no one's right and everyone's wrong. Dems and GOP alike. Answers? I dunno, invest in education and take a chance on people to pay back their loans and homes if given the opportunity to work.

And George Clooney is a pompous ass.
