Re: The Best Actor

Don't judge her by her action rolls, although she gets points for the action sequences. And I'm not even relying on Lost in Translation which I thought was a so-so film. I'm concentrating on Girl with a Pearl Earring, Love Song for Bobby Long, The Other Boleyn Girl, her voice only performance in Her which many are calling the best ever, and my favorite, playing the controlling Brooklyn accented bitch in Don Jon.

As for males, and sticking with English language fare for the time being, Michael Fassbender rarely puts a foot wrong.

I agree, and if he had more under his belt I'd have put him up there. He was nominated for 12 Years a Slave last year, but he should have been nominated, and won, for The Counselor--a tremendous performance.

Jake Gyllenhaal springs immediately to mind - his performances in Denis Villeneuve's two films last year Enemy and especially Prisoners were excellent.

I didn't like either of those movies, especially Enemy, but with Michael Peña he put one of the greatest partnerships of any kind on film in End of Watch. He was also exceptional in Jarhead.

- Robert De Niro
- Jack Nicholson
- Sean Penn
- Edward Norton (someone who hasn't really done too many films where he can show his acting chops - mostly chooses run of the mill roles and does them adequately).

The first three are great within their range, but they don't venture out of that much if at all. De Niro (and Morgan Freeman) have been on the Hollywood assembly line for years now , and Sean Penn doesn't know how to do much besides moody. Ed Norton has done some good stuff (Fight Club, American History X, The Illusionist and most recently in The Bourne Legacy), but he's done some stinkers too, like his Wes Anderson stuff and his role in the otherwise good The Italian Job.)
