I recorded the Academy Awards and then zipped through about 90% of it.
Best actor/actress categories show that roles portraying mental "challenges" still play big in Hollywood.
Sean Penn (wtf was he doing presenting best pic in the first place), prior to his backhanded "Green Card" complement/faux pas, uttered the dumbest statement (and backhanded American Sniper slam) in Oscar history, "It doesn't matter how much they made at the box office". Bwahahahahahahahah.
My 3 favorite pictures of the year were, Nightcrawler, American Sniper & Birdman. If I had to pick one I'd probably choose Nightcrawler, but I'm happy that Birdman won and glad that at least American Sniper was recognized with a nomination......and a blockbuster box office.
Birdman's real strength, in spite of it's excellent cinematography and so-so plot, was the outstanding acting and dialogue.The most re-watchable movie, in a weak year for me what with none having a heavy reliance on music, was Lucy, with honorable mention to Draft Day.
Jake Gyllenhaal best actor for Nightcrawler hands down and in a strong field.
Best animated films, in another weak field, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, The Lego Movie & Nut Job--none of which were nominated, and with a total dud, Big Hero 6, winning.
Music? What music? Hollywood, the last reliable source for musical creativity in the US (world?) has been shut down. And Broadway is on life support AND suicide watch what with nothing but revivals, anthologies and sing-song pablum keeping it "alive". The 50 year tribute to The Sound of Music (not nearly one of my favs at all but still better than teeny-pop and Broadway today) felt like it was inserted so they'd at least have something. Pop queen Lady Gaga (now there's irony for you), did have a good voice, but her tats were distracting as hell, she's putting on weight, and she's no Julie Andrews in that role.
