The Commitments (Film)
Alan Parker's joyous comedy about the rise and fall of a working-class soul band in contemporary Dublin. Unemployed Jimmy Rabbitte is asked by his friends 'Outspan' Foster and Derek Scully to manage their dismal band. He starts by sacking their keyboard player and, advertising for real musicians, ends up with a ten-piece band. The new members include 'Deco' Cuffe, found singing blind-drunk at a wedding, and 45-year-old trumpeter Joey 'The Lips' Fagan, who claims to have played with Elvis, Otis, James Brown and The Beatles, and is accepted as the band's musical director and inspiration. Calling themselves The Commitments, they immerse themselves in soul classics and gain a local following but Jimmy wants one decent paying gig. Then he hears that Wilson Pickett is in town for a one-man show.
