Some real interesting developments, if you ask me. I can see that I've been skewing my film rankings higher as time goes on.
  • Sergio Leone fell off the list entirely because apparently he was mislabeled as the director on My Name is Nobody (he'd be #1 based on his 3 film rankings of 93.67).

Kubrick jumped Miyazaki after I ranked Miyazaki's early directing work on that Lupin film.

Scorsese and Tarantino are duking it out with less than a quarter of a point separating the two. I think Scorsese will stay on top this time.

Brad Bird is replaced by Lee Unkrich to represent Pixar.

Joss Whedon falls off the list as superhero fatigue has set in and all his films are dropping in ranking.

Edgar Wright enters the list. Rightfully so, as most of his films rank between 88-90.

George Roy Hill also enters the list as I am seeing Butch and Sundance as almost a perfect film. The Sting was also great. Haven't seen any of his "bad" films.

AFlickering wrote:I'm only including directors by whom I've seen 2 or more films, though I might do another list with a 3 minimum when I can be bothered. People who've seen a lot more movies than me might want a higher minimum, or alternatively not waste their time on this thread. :(

Mine:
1. Andrei Tarkovsky 95.33 (3 films)
2. Wong Kar-Wai 93.5 (2 films)
3. Satoshi Kon 93 (2 films)
4. Akira Kurosawa 92.67 (6 films)
5. Milos Forman 91.5 (2 films)

Interesting that Forman sneaked onto the list, bet he'll drop pretty quickly when I see some of his less known works. Also interesting but not really surprising that my favourite director Herzog isn't up there - the score was dragged down by Nosferatu and Even Dwarfes Started Small even though they're still good.

8 years on, upping this to 4 minimum:
1. Paul Thomas Anderson 89.93 (6 films)
2. Robert Altman 89.20 (5 films)
3. Wes Anderson 88.80 (5 films)
4. David Lynch 87.00 (10 films)
5. John Cassavetes 86.88 (8 films)
6. Paul Verhoeven 85.25 (4 films)
7. Terence Malick 85.17 (6 films)
8. Sion Sono 82.67 (6 films)
9. Charlie Chaplin 81.67 (9 films)
10. Mike Leigh 81.20 (5 films)

for the record, my average ratings for those on my previous list now:
Andrei Tarkovsky 90.00 (2 films) - i've deleted two that i don't remember well enough.
Wong Kar-Wai 69.50 (4 films) - 3 deleted.
Satoshi Kon 85.33 (3 films)
Akira Kurosawa 72.40 (5 films) - 1 deleted.
Milos Forman 80.5 (2 films)

Surprising that Aronofsky and the Coen Brothers both fall off my top 10. Brad Bird and Joss Whedon shouldn't be on this list if you factor in their entries. Course, Danny Boyle is "at-bat". Waiting at 3 films are a couple of big names that could see entry onto the list if I just watch the right movies.

Danny Boyle is still sitting at an average of 83.75, but I increased my ranking for The Departed, which pulls Scorsese onto the list and kicks him off. Ranked Inside Llewyn Davis which pulled the Coen Brothers up, and increased my scores for both a Leone film and a Nolan film. I can't imagine Nolan is going to gain anymore on Leone. Interstellar will probably drop his ranking as soon as I see it. Wes Anderson has a chance at passing Leone in the future, though.

Of those directors who I've only seen 3 movies from, 3 of them have the potential to enter the list strongly when I watch that fourth film: Brad Bird of Pixar, Rob Reiner, and Joss Whedon when I rank the second Avengers film.

Yep, list didn't really change at all. No one new on it, just a bit of a mix-up in the order because of my minor tweaks, and the fact that some of these guys with 4 films are one mediocre film away from falling off my list. If we went up to a 5 film minimum, which I'm seeing from some in this thread, we'd add Scorsese, Peter Jackson, Guy Ritchie, and David Fincher to the list.

Low film - My Name is Nobody (79)

I finally ranked Moonrise Kingdom, my 4th Wes Anderson film. That puts him eligible to make my list with a four film minimum, and he bumps off Peter Jackson, who is sitting lower than he should because I'm a huge fan of his Tolkien adaptations, and I haven't ranked the last Hobbit film yet (too soon since seeing it).
