Re: Subjectivity vs. Objectivity (in art)

Art is subjective and if you disliked 8½, it does not mean that you are wrong or right, but it does seem rather bizarre to see one of the most revered films in the history of film and my favourite film being slammed 6 posts in a row. To defend 8½, it is a beautiful film with some of the most memora...

Re: Subjectivity vs. Objectivity (in art)

maybe a more interesting question would be: would a specific set of objective rules be, if possible, desirable? not necessarily in personal appreciation, but in written criticism. I think the best critic you can find would be one who honestly criticized the objective aspects of a movie, and was one...

Re: Subjectivity vs. Objectivity (in art)

Art and the artistic aspect of a film is by definition subjective. We necessarily have diverse emotional, subjective (individual) reactions. A sunset isn't beautiful to everyone, and neither is a truckload of dead babies universally abhorrent. I think film is the greatest art form since it best comb...

"State of Play" vs. "24"

I just saw State of Play , and besides the fact that it reminded me that 24 is indeed still just a TV show, I couldn't help but wonder if 24 didn't get the idea for this years premise (contract military) from the movie which had been in production since 2007. They both raise the question: while a lo...

Re: How Do You Rank Your Movies?

I do not give a score above 90 unless I consider the movie a masterpiece. A score of 90 is still a superb movie, but in my mind there is somehow an important distinction between a masterpiece and a movie which is merely superb. I agree. "Masterpiece" is the word I use for my 100's (90-99 ...

Re: How Do You Rank Your Movies?

This is very similar to the "what kind of reviewer do you think you are" thread. Ergo: I start from the point that Hollywood average is a 7/10 on a past and present, worldwide scale. A 7 is very good, but if you want to excel, especially in the movie capital of the World, you gotta be a lo...

I start from the point that Hollywood average is a 7/10 on a past and present, worldwide scale. A 7 is very good, but if you want to excel, especially in the movie capital of the World, you gotta be a lot better than a 7. Above all, to get to first base with me anyway, it's got to have a point, and ...
