i know my previous design-oriented bitchings went nowhere but i am still going to assume this is temporary?

I agree with you. I have complained about this before (about a year ago), but it looks like we're stuck with it.

We are trying to move toward a standard image size, and are still working on how to make this page look better. Don't worry too much -- we agree that this isn't the best layout for the User Profile page, yet, but it's a work in progress and not the finished product.
