Should the primary name of a non-english series or film be in English?

Should the primary name of a non-english series or film be in English?

Post by Skavau »

I see examples of both here. My instinct is to presume that this is an English-language based site, so non-english series and films should have their english name but I do see other examples where the English name is the alternative title.

In some cases the original non-English title is "the English title" in that the film was only ever known by the non-English title in English-speaking culture. Listing Belle de jour as anything other than Belle de jour would be idiocy.

The following is what Wiki has to say about IMDb's policy "Originally, IMDb's English language sites displayed titles according to their original country-of-origin language, however, in 2010 IMDb began allowing individual users in the UK and US to choose primary title display by either the original-language titles, or the US or UK release title."

In other words, absolve the site of taking any sort of stance, and let users argue about it on a case by case basis in the forums. I for one would like to see The Young Girls of Rochefort renamed to sound elegantly cultural. Anyone who disagrees has unsavoury political sympathies.

I typically enter the title used at IMDB. I will put in an alt if
  • * IMDB lists an alt in the main page header for an item
    * The source country uses a title that reflects a possibly popular source material
    * An alt title is required so that the item is returned using the title employed for English-North American distribution (my own bias)
From a user's perspective, if I am likely to encounter the item with a particular title, I need the item to be returned on a search using that title.
