Submarine movies

Post by joseywales »

The military version of werewolf movies. Where they all at?

Recently I had a lengthy discussion with a naval officer friend and we could barely name 10 sub movies combined (he said Crimson Tide is better than Das Boot LOL). As per the collection I see I'm not missing any of the big ones, so do any of y'all have some ideas on what to watch that could even be considered "close enough". Anything under the radar (no pun intended) naval would be an appreciated boon.

TIA buds. It's nice to be back after my trip!

Assuming this is the collection we're talking about, I seem to be unable to add this prototypical submarine flick I came across. Maybe it's a bug...

The film already was in the collection, but it's listed between Das Boot (1985) and Comandante (2023) because it ignores the French article le

Not a "submarine" movie, but I recently watched "The Russians Are Coming..." (1966) and they couldn't have a submarine from the military, so they apparently faked one. Though the movie was hilarious, the submarine was not realistic really. I'm not an expert on arms but look at that:

Here are my favorites:

in order...

1. Invention for Destruction (1958)
2. Das Boot (1981)
3. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
4. The Hunt for Red October (1990)
5. Crimson Tide (1995)
6. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)
7. U-571 (2000)
8. Black Sea (2014)
9. Kursk (2018)
10. K-19: The Widowmaker (2002)

Not Seen: The Wolf's Call (2019)

These are the only submarine films I've seen, not a top 10. There are not that many out-and-out submarine movies, especially if you were to limit your selection to a professional budget film in the English language. Then, there's really only about a half dozen. There's so few, that the debate over favorites is really only between Red October and Crimson Tide.

Maybe because the genre hasn't been done to death, I find something to like in nearly all of these types of films, even if they're clearly nothing special. The only one I hold any contempt for is K-19.

In reality, the sub films of the military ilk all fall into the shadow of Das Boot.
