"The Martian"

Post by Stewball »

OK, how many movies have tried to be a feel good movie, and failed, or succeeded only to a minimal degree. This pretty much announced that what it was, yet succeeded beyond anything in recent memory. Does that make it great? No. But it does make it a significant success. It's an original story that doesn't really push any boundaries, but has you leaving the theater feeling good--except of course for those among us who feel that's irrational, or worse, because we aren't supposed to feel good unless we feel bad. It succeed at what it set out to do.

A high point is the use of music. It's a running gag that the only music he has available after he's stranded is 70's Disco. But they put that to good use with ABBA's Waterloo.

(Deleted my idea for using Kenny Loggins I'm Alright due the line, "Don't nobody worry 'bout me", which doesn't work at all)

Looks like Ridley Scott may be coming out of his semi-deserved slump--having had one very undeserved bomb (The Counselor), and one deserved disappointment, Prometheus). He deserves this box office success.

Nice review Stewball.

I saw it a few days ago. Overall I enjoyed it. But I'm finding the most memorable parts and aspects of the film for me... are the things I disliked. I hated the music. For me, the disco music joke got old very quickly. I hated the "comedy" - all of it. I hated basically every scene that took place on Earth. On the plus side... The Mars stuff was great. Thankfully that was the majority of the film.

I had high expectations even though I tried not to. I didn't watch any of the previews or read anything about it.

Gonna give it a 71.

I thought the comedy was generally good, certainly not great though. The disco joke was funny the first time, but soooo overused.

This movie was clearly liberal propaganda for NASA, a crooked organization that promotes bullshit pseudo-science. I can't believe you'd promote such nonsense.

I agree, especially about the humor, which I thought was good but not that prevalent. As for the music, he could have at least found something in the computer's library from the emergence of the early 80s Disco Sucks revolution, like "I'm Alright" would have been perfect if it just didn't have that second line, "Don't nobody worry 'bout me". Mebbe "She caught the Katy (left me a mule to ride)", or "Blaze of Glory". So much for this weeks edition of Monday Morning QB.

8-) Unlike said libs who only see things in black or white (in this case, my side and yours, devoid of any other considerations), I give credit where credit it due. Even Hitler got the trains to run on time. If I may quote myself, "Out of the mouths of babes, or the Devil himself, the Truth is the Truth". (Actually that last part is Gandhi, but I came up with it independently.)

I must be some kind of gravity well for the conservatives of the forum, because anytime I post anything the band gets back together again. I think it's kind of cute.

Of course, I think there's a legitimate observation to be made here. It's amusing to see someone railing against NASA for being complicit with liberal propaganda only to enjoy a movie that is, let's be honest, shameless advertisement for NASA.

Are conservatives, republicans, libertarians, climate scientists, atheists, agnostics, theists, capitalists, independents, NASA scientists, scientists in general, monolithic? No. Are liberal socialists monolithic? Absolutely! Apostates are shuffled off into Politically Incorrect Hell. They always complain about others not seeing the grey areas, but they're as black and white as they come--or orange and white in this case.

Seriously. We used to mock Stewie for injecting politics into everything. Suture Self is much worse in that regard.

On a different note, I find the story of how this book was made to be really fucking cool. Andy Weir was an ordinary computer programmer who thought to himself "hey, what would happen if someone was stranded on Mars and we had to bring him back?". Writing computer simulations for a living, this was a natural fit.

So he released the book for free, episodically, and a bunch of people liked it. Eventually, some fans talked him into offering it somewhere for 25 cents or some other obscenely small amount. Well, it was a huge hit and was optioned.

I despised The Martian (the book). Is it worth seeing The Martian (the movie)? How much of the so-called "humour" made it into the adaptation?
