I'm not sure if you'd actually like the film, but Rogue One is different than other Star Wars movies in several ways. It's still a fairy tale for kids, but I found it more grounded and focused on ordinary people than other films in the series, and it's all the better for it.

Another fascinating thing about it is that the American right, especially the far right, seems to hate it, whereas publications like Jacobin, one of the leading socialist publications in America, are writing positive reviews: https://www.jacobinmag.com/2016/12/rogu ... lion-left/.

For better or worse, it's become a peculiar flashpoint issue in American movie criticism and I'd say it's worth checking out for that reason alone. Those that are inclined to look at it as a film in isolation, like Richard Brody and A.O. Scott, have written negative reviews, and their criticisms are valid. But I think when you look at the film within the context of modern American politics, it's unusually brazen for a blockbuster.

I assure you if you were never fond of the Star Wars movies to begin with then Rogue One sure as hell won't win you over. The older movies had plenty of personality and was an entertaining space romp; this movie on the other hand, was a total bore. It deviates away from the Jedi crap (which is nothing new if you know anything about the EU) but where it goes with that is essentially creating a very generic movie that uses a lot of Hollywood cliches unabashedly. Honestly, this movie would be easily forgotten if it didn't have the Star Wars name attached to it.

If you're looking for something better related to Star Wars I recommend you play the KotOR series and read X-Wing and Thrawn. Those series are fantastic.

That said I hate how politicized simplistic movies like this have become. Admittedly I've let my morals keep me from watching certain films (such as Ghostbusters and Sausage Party) but I don't think the Star Wars movies ever tried to push some sort of political message, aside from the pointless diversity angle a lot of media is taking up these days.... but then again, as far as the alt right is concerned, that's enough to trigger them. The political polarization in this day and age is honestly rather depressing.

could you (or someone) please elaborate on that for those of us unfamiliar with Bayesian Averages ?
