"Lucky" (2017)

(spoilers)

It's a semi-biographical story/tribute to a 90 year-old curmudgeon (Harry Dean Stanton) who lives by himself in a small desert town in southern Arizona. In the film, he has a flashback to a terrible experience as a child of being in a dark void. At the end of the movie, in a bar, he's talking about his atheism to the patrons and describes what he thinks comes after this life by referring them to that dark void. One of them asks, "what are we supposed to do with that?" He says, "smile". Then at the very end of the film, out in the desert, he looks straight in the camera, smiles, and walks away.

Then, being an actor and I'm sure not wanting to miss a cue, he dies, for real, a month ago at 91.

So, for the atheists out there, or anyone, is a smile the best response to the dark void?
