my favourite "actor's first movie in the director's chair"(s):
Clint Eastwood - "Play Misty For Me"
Terry(s) Gilliam and Jones - "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"
Charles Laughton - "The Night of the Hunter"
EDIT:
and the inverse: (not their first turns at acting, but still worthy of mention)
Sidney Pollack in "Eyes Wide Shut" (otherwise, one my least fave Kubricks)
Roman Polanski in "The Tenant" (<<<<<< he kicked ass in that one!!!)
Sam Fuller's sagely awesomeness in "The State of Things"
Orson Welles in "Citizen Kane" (becoming actor and director pretty well at the same time?)

Jean-Louis Trintignant - "Une journée bien remplie ou Neuf meurtres insolites dans une même journée par un seul homme dont ce n'est pas le métier"
Ulli Lommel - I've only seen "Tenderness of Wolves". His newer stuff is apparently crap.

Surprised no one mentioned Ron Howard yet.
