ShogunRua wrote:I have seen very few films (less than 5) from a lot of great and even favorite directors, so with that in mind, at a minimum of 5 pictures, we have

Sidney Lumet (6 films, 80 average)
Yuen Woo-Ping (6 films, 78.83 average)
Takashi Miike (5 films, 77.6 average)
Sammo Hung (8 films, 72.88 average)
Mel Brooks (5 films, 72.4 average)
Martin Scorsese (7 films, 72.14 average)
James Cameron (5 films, 71.2 average)
Guy Hamilton (6 films, 71.17 average)
Coen Brothers (7 films, 69.43 average)

It's been over 4 years, so an update is in order. And wow, this list has changed;

1. Sergio Leone (5 films, 86 average, brand-new entry!)
2. Johnnie To (5 films, 80.8 average, brand-new entry!)
3. Sidney Lumet (7 films, 80.43 average)
4. Billy Wilder (6 films, 79.33 average, brand-new entry!)
5. Yuen Wo-Ping (6 films, 78.83 average)
6. Sammo Hung (8 films, 72.88 average)
7. Jackie Chan (7 films, 72.29 average)
8. David Zucker (6 films, 72.17 average, brand-new entry!)
9. Martin Scorsese (7 films, 72.14 average)
10. Mel Brooks (7 films, 71.86 average)

Leone gets in thanks to a credit on My Name is Nobody pulling him up to the required five films. To is one of my favorite directors and got to the five film minimum after I watched the outstanding Election series. Lumet is my all-time favorite, and it's strange I have only seen one more of his movies in such a long time, the outstanding Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. I had seen zero movies by Wilder during my last list, but he is a fine inclusion at 4th here. Also, Zucker gets in thanks to the hilarious Top Secret!.

Danny Boyle is still sitting at an average of 83.75, but I increased my ranking for The Departed, which pulls Scorsese onto the list and kicks him off. Ranked Inside Llewyn Davis which pulled the Coen Brothers up, and increased my scores for both a Leone film and a Nolan film. I can't imagine Nolan is going to gain anymore on Leone. Interstellar will probably drop his ranking as soon as I see it. Wes Anderson has a chance at passing Leone in the future, though.

Of those directors who I've only seen 3 movies from, 3 of them have the potential to enter the list strongly when I watch that fourth film: Brad Bird of Pixar, Rob Reiner, and Joss Whedon when I rank the second Avengers film.

A few years and hundreds of reviews later...

1. Stanley Kubrick - 91.89 (9)
2. Sergio Leone - 91.75 (4)
3. Francis Ford Coppola - 90.80 (5)
4. Akira Kurosawa - 90.43 (7)
5. Béla Tarr - 90.25 (4)
6. Sidney Lumet - 89.75 (4)
7. Andrei Tarkovsky - 89.00 (4)
8. Terrence Malick - 88.25 (4)
9. Buster Keaton - 88.14 (7)
10. Joel and Ethan Coen - 86.75 (12)

Sounds pretty accurate. Coppola's probably gonna drop once I get around to his later films.
Upping the limit to five films, after the Coens we have:

7. Charles Chaplin - 86.60 (5)
8. Alfred Hitchcock - 86.43 (14)
9. Terry Gilliam - 85.20 (5)
10. Ingmar Bergman - 84.64 (11)

Also pretty accurate, though I thought Bergman would be higher.

Surprising that Aronofsky and the Coen Brothers both fall off my top 10. Brad Bird and Joss Whedon shouldn't be on this list if you factor in their entries. Course, Danny Boyle is "at-bat". Waiting at 3 films are a couple of big names that could see entry onto the list if I just watch the right movies.

AFlickering wrote:I'm only including directors by whom I've seen 2 or more films, though I might do another list with a 3 minimum when I can be bothered. People who've seen a lot more movies than me might want a higher minimum, or alternatively not waste their time on this thread. :(

Mine:
1. Andrei Tarkovsky 95.33 (3 films)
2. Wong Kar-Wai 93.5 (2 films)
3. Satoshi Kon 93 (2 films)
4. Akira Kurosawa 92.67 (6 films)
5. Milos Forman 91.5 (2 films)

Interesting that Forman sneaked onto the list, bet he'll drop pretty quickly when I see some of his less known works. Also interesting but not really surprising that my favourite director Herzog isn't up there - the score was dragged down by Nosferatu and Even Dwarfes Started Small even though they're still good.

8 years on, upping this to 4 minimum:
1. Paul Thomas Anderson 89.93 (6 films)
2. Robert Altman 89.20 (5 films)
3. Wes Anderson 88.80 (5 films)
4. David Lynch 87.00 (10 films)
5. John Cassavetes 86.88 (8 films)
6. Paul Verhoeven 85.25 (4 films)
7. Terence Malick 85.17 (6 films)
8. Sion Sono 82.67 (6 films)
9. Charlie Chaplin 81.67 (9 films)
10. Mike Leigh 81.20 (5 films)

for the record, my average ratings for those on my previous list now:
Andrei Tarkovsky 90.00 (2 films) - i've deleted two that i don't remember well enough.
Wong Kar-Wai 69.50 (4 films) - 3 deleted.
Satoshi Kon 85.33 (3 films)
Akira Kurosawa 72.40 (5 films) - 1 deleted.
Milos Forman 80.5 (2 films)

Minimum 3 films:

1. Sam Wood 9.40 (5)
2. Abdellatif Kechiche 9.33 (3)
3. Mark Sandrich 9.00 (5)
4. Milos Forman 9.00 (4)
5. Tom Tykwer 9.00 (3)

Minimum 10 films:

1. Federico Fellini 8.58 (12)
2. Alfred Hitchcock 8.51 (41)
3. Robert Wise 8.40 (10)
4. David Lean 8.20 (10)
5. Billy Wilder 8.17 (18)
6. Stanley Kubrick 8.08 (12)
7. William Wyler 8.08 (13)
8. Brian De Palma 8.00 (12)
9. Pedro Almodóvar 7.94 (16)
10. Lars von Trier 7.82 (11)
= Ken Loach 7.82 (11)

Hitchock's average went down a little by seeing his lesser known films, so I think he's the real number 1.
