Perfect "10" filmmmakers?

Post by snallygaster »

It's perhaps even less meaningful than the usual "list" topics, but I'm interested in how many perfect T10 filmmaker rankings are floating around out there. I don't have any "perfect" directors and I have to set my threshold at 3 to get any "perfect" actors. I have:

David Attenborough (for voice narration) -- Planet Earth, Life, Frozen Planet
Ineko Arima -- Equinox Flower, Human Condition I, Tokyo Twilight
Youko Tsukasa -- Yojimbo, Late Autumn, The End of Summer

It seems most of my top actors have Ozu to thank for their high rankings; most of his favourites are 9.x.

I also have Jumpei Gomikawa / Zenzo Matsuyama / Masaki Kobayashi for perfect 10s as writers but they only rank since The Human Condition counts as 3 movies.

hmm pretty interesting. i don't have any directors with a perfect 10 (though Leos Carax is real close). actors i have

Monica Vitti
- L'avventura
- L'eclisse
- Red Desert
- La notte

Charles Halton
- The Shop Around the Corner
- Stranger on the Third Floor
- To Be or Not to Be

Charles Middleton
- The Grapes of Wrath
- Safe in Hell
- Hell's Highway

Vitti is the only one i really like, the other just happened to not be in any shitty films that i've seen.

While I generally dislike list topics, this one is interesting.

For me, there are 4 directors;

Sergio Leone-

Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
For a Few Dollars More (1965)
A Fistful of Dollars (1964)
My Name Is Nobody (1973) (Supposedly, Leone wrote but only directed one scene in this last one, but it's still a T10 film nonetheless)

Kenji Misumi-

Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (1972)
Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart in the Land of Demons (1973)
Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart to Hades (1972)
Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart at the River Styx (1972)

Chan-Wook Park-

Oldboy (2003)
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002)
I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006)

George Roy Hill-

Slap Shot (1977)
The Sting (1973)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

3 actors:
David Prowse and Peter Mayhew for Star Wars, obviously
John Cazale: Godfather(s) and Deerhunter

2 screenwriters:
Jonathon Nolan, who apparently wasn't involved in any of the "shitty" Christopher Nolan films
Lawrence Kasdan for Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Ha, my perfect 10's for actors are also a couple people who I've only ranked stuff from the original Star Wars films and John Cazale (although in my case Deerhunter is replaced with Dog Day Afternoon and The Conversation).

I've got Frank Vincent as an actor in the Scorsese films. That's it.

I couldn't imagine ever having a perfect 10 director. If I'd seen 3 (or more) movies from a director that were all T10s, I would keep seeking out his or her films until I found something that was less so. My highest rated directors are Bryan Singer and Lee Unkrich, both at 9.75 with 3/4 films being T10. (X-Men, X2, and The Usual Suspects for Singer; Monsters, Inc., Toy Story 3, and Finding Nemo for Unkrich.

Other directors have more T10 films, but a lower overall average. 6/10 for Tarantino and 6/12 for Kubrick.

With actors, I have two perfect 10s: David Prowse and Peter Mayhew of Star Wars fame. John Cazale (9.75) is close, but Dog Day Afternoon is but a lowly T9 for me.

Sergio Leone is my only director.
Unsurprisingly, Mario Brega, who was in all three of the Man With No Name films was my only actor.
I was a bit surprised to see that Ellen Burnstyn also had a perfect record with The Fountain, The Exorcist and Requiem For A Dream. Looking at her filmography though, I haven't ranked Wicker Man. Wah-wah-waaaah.
