Most Influential Directors

Post by CosmicMonkey »

As far as I can tell there's surprisingly been no thread on this topic yet. I don't want to know who your favourite directors are, or your highest-rated or most-watched, I want to know who y'all think are the 5 (or 10) directors who have had the biggest influence in the history of film-making, for better or worse, whether technical, artistic, aesthetic or narrative.

I'll start off first:

1. Alfred Hitchcock
2. Martin Scorsese
3. Steven Spielberg
4. Stanley Kubrick
5. Akira Kurosawa
6. Ingmar Bergman
7. Jean-Luc Godard
8. John Ford
9. Howard Hawks
10. Buster Keaton

You'll get varying lists depending on what is is supposed to have been influenced (e.g. history as a whole, filmmaking itself). I'll stick with history as a whole.

1. D. Griffith
2. Frank Capra (besides having directed many very popular films, he also directed propaganda films for the allies)
3. Preston Sturges (paved the way for Orson Welles, Billy Wilder and others, by giving directors far more room for creativity)
4. F.W. Murnau or Fritz Lang
6. Eisenstein,
7. Chaplin
8. George Méliès
9. Hitchcock
10. Renoir or Godard
