Cars 3 (2017)

Post by MmzHrrdb »

It's unsurprising that Pixar's most uninteresting franchise has yielded their most uninteresting movie. Admittedly, Cars 3 is pleasantly innocuous and far ahead of most competing animated films (indeed, attending audiences will likely be treated to previews for such horrors as Ferdinand and The Nut Job 2 as a reminder for how low the depths of the medium can be). But it's far below the standards Pixar has set for itself, and really only barely races past Cars 2 to avoid being stamped as the studio's worst.

If nothing else, the visuals are as stunning as expected (if not more so). Every time Pixar tops themselves, they manage to raise the bar again, and Cars 3 is arguably their most visually astounding film yet, with the gorgeous environments literally indistinguishable from real life. The arresting nature of the animation helps hold the attention, which helps avoid potentially snoozing through the predictable and slow-moving plot.

Cars 3 has some sparse charms, and its themes show occasional signs of maturity. But it's an affably unremarkable film at best (and a tediously redundant one at worst). Even its somewhat daring and surprising discussions about being deprived of your assumed purpose or passing your point of effectiveness has been better handled in Toy Story 3, Monsters University, and even the first Cars film. Mega-Cars fans will find many pleasures in Cars 3 (not the least of which is that it's a true sequel to the original, picking up where the first left off in terms of story and approach, while completely ignoring its bizarre follow-up), but it seems like the only movie-goers that fall under that umbrella are young boys and John Lasseter.

Cars 3 is preceded by a short film called Lou, written and directed by Dave Mullins. It unsurprisingly outclasses the main attraction, with an inventiveness and poignancy that Cars 3 fails to reach.
