Mirai (2018)

Post by peyrin »

The biggest step forward yet in an already storied career. In moving beyond the large-scale epics he's best known for, Hosoda gains a new confidence from being able to draw from his autobiographical experiences to depict his trademark familial themes with a seamless sense of magical realism that feels much more organic but maintains the infectious spirit of adventure from his previous works. And in place of grand sprawling storyboards, Hosoda puts his animation talent toward breathtaking character animation - Hosoda claims Mirai has the most realistic depiction of children's movements since My Neighbor Totoro, and watching the characters tripping, running, and climbing stairs, it's hard to disagree.
