It seems Hollywood's fall release strategy is shifting. I'd noticed the last couple of years that low budget films short on action but higher on mature themes were being released in August-October time period (not counting films aimed at Halloween audiences). It's habitually has low box office then. Maybe it's just me but it seemed to be even more pronounced this year. It's either the good low budget stuff, or real crap.
One's I'd put in the excellent or better category this year:
Get Low
Mao’s Last Dancer
Going the Distance
The Social Network
It’s kind of a Funny Story
Hereafter
Exit Through the Gift Shop
Winter’s Bone
Flipped
Easy A
Lovely Still
Secretariat
Another "thought" (question), why is it taking Disney/Pixar so long for The Incredibles and Finding Nemo to come out on Blu Ray? It isn't like they weren't in Hi Def to begin with.

"The Social Network" ($50 million production budget) and "Secretariat" ($35 million production budget) don't really belong in this group. (The rest of your list took less than $15 million to make each)
