I love Rate Your Music! Here's my page: http://rateyourmusic.com/~Lepus

As far as book recommendations and cataloging go, this seems like a good site: http://www.librarything.com/

Unfortunately, if you want to catalogue more than 200 books it's $10 a year, or $25 for life.

It just seems like alternative freaks got over the site... Am I the only one who thinks that alternative music is losing it's soul? It's not decaying, it's just becoming more and more mechanic and souless each time... Where has the experimental beauty of bands like Velvet Underground's gone? Huh? [then again, it might be that I don't listen to enough modern day alternative music]

last.fm and pandora.com recommend music according to one's tastes.

Regarding books, I just found this service: http://reader2.com/ I haven't used it though.

yep, Last.fm is basically what you would want as far as music goes. It uses the same general idea as criticker (finds people that have similar taste, then finds other artists that corresponds. The only difference is you don't rate the music yourself, but rather simply listen to it and let the site keep track for you.

Last.fm is a great site, I use it myself, but it's annoying when you don't usually listen to much music on your PC. I doubt their will be a decent scrobbler for the iRiver Clix anytime soon either. Plus the fact that there are a lot of idiots on the site, simply just up for an argument.

The best book recommender ever? Alexandria Digital Literature.
Unfortunately, they started putting more weight on selling fiction than giving recommendations, and I suppose that it didn't work out too well since the site ended up being down more frequently than up - and pretty much everyone gave up using it.

The recommender itself was brilliant, just about all the recommendations that I got from it were perfectly accurate.

Looks like the site will actually be relaunched this year: http://www.alexlit.com/
Assuming that it'll use the same recommender engine (and I don't see why it wouldn't), it could definitely be worth checking out if/when that happens.

As for Criticker? I'd say that TV-shows and such would be a splendid addition...

I've also been thinking about a book Criticker, but as for today I think it's better to prioritize improvements of the film section. I love this site, but the system is far from flawless. As for music, I think it's hard for any site to beat last.fm (http://www.last.fm). The whole idea of keeping track of your music rather than raiting it is just perfect.

librarything.com is the best that I've seen.
Though, like amazon.com, it seems to have the bad habit of only recommending books written by the same authors of the books I've read.

If there's another site out there, I'd love to know about it!
