Re: Film Club Recommendations

Not in a movie club, but from being in a book club I've learned that 1) the popularity and 'classic appeal' of a book positively correlates with attendance and 2), unsurprisingly perhaps, that a large majority should have something they enjoy and hence discuss about it.

Here's my list of recommendations:

- 12 Angry Men / Paths of Glory
- Bicycle Thieves
- Rear Window
- Seven Samurai / Yojimbo
- Winter light (Kierkegaard inspired film on the silence of God)
- The Battle of Algiers

These three are my top recommendations for the kind of group you're describing:

Paper Moon
The Lady Eve
Sullivan's Travels

But also:

Singin' in the Rain
A Face in the Crowd
Breaking Away
The Ox-Bow Incident
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
The Apartment

wassssuppp. how's the music-making going?

on Rohmer - he's probably actually super risky. i just wanted to squeeze in some french naturalism, because if you've been brought up on hollywood action, it's sort of paradigm shifting to be gently placed into a small, french relationship drama.
but rohmer's light-handed philosophising is like a classy salad with sundried tomatoes and walnut oil—if you serve him up to a habitual steak eater they're going to look at you with all kinds of befuddlement (but if they're reading flaubert, dig in!). whereas something like the Dardennes is more familiarly oppressive and you inhabit the characters, rather than observing a delicate play of first-world love chess. maybe test him out yourself first. and then there's chabrol, who is spicy as fuck.

good luck with the thing! but maybe entertain the possibility that they just want more wilderpeapole. i've ad too much coffee. can't write proper.

Oh - Kidnappers is on youtube. you should watch that. but feel free to never mention it again if you don't like it.

edit: I haven't seen the other Clayton movie, but I'll keep a look out for it

i like dardan's yojimbo/sanjuro suggestion! or maybe Hidden Fortress. or another fun japanese one you/patrons will probably like: Sazen Tange and the Pot Worth a Million Ryo (1935)
