if you look at his list of 0/100 scores its really hard to imagine someone with his taste

Well... to quote another one of my favorite films: consistency isn't really a human trait.

I know I shouldn't be aggravated by people like that, but.. I really can't stand reviewers who seem to write reviews purely to piss people off without having any real opinion on the film.

Well, jeepers. Sorry, man, I didn't mean to offend you... or, for that matter, anyone else with these thumbnail reviews of mine. It's just that, in general, the whole "new new wave of Japanese horror" bores me to death... and I love horror films in general. Give me Kwaidan any day.

I saw Gozu in the theatre, too, on a double bill with Audition, so I tried to sleep through as much of it as possible while waiting for the second feature to start. It seemed so very much like a Nipponese much much less fun attempt at a John Waters movie...

Look into his reviews of Nights of Cabiria, Stalker, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Four Hundred Blows, High Noon, Kagemusha, Virgin Spring.. and others. He also possesses a "bullshit detector" and tends to scream when things are "repeated and repeated and repeated". :P

If he didn't comment those Z's about Nights of Cabiria, I wouldn't care..

Why, yes, there are an awful lot of "classics" for which I don't care very much at all. However, the more nakedly honest we all are about various pictures here, the more useful it will ultimately be.

It's funny, however, that you should suggest that I get bored very easily. I used to have a ladyfriend who found dull a lot of films that I consider to be quite fine. I took her to see All or Nothing, and, while I liked it, she just gently nestled into the crook of my arm and went to sleep. She was a cat owner, so she manifested a lot of catlike behaviors like that.

Also, chess has been an obsession with me since I was eight years old, yet nobody seems to believe me when I talk about how exciting I find the game. People in general seem to find it boring (cf. the offhand remark that Diego makes about it in the 1940 version of The Mark of Zorro), but I have to make an effort of will to not play chess all day. Go figure.

This review actually made me laugh out loud. Many of Stain's reviews do, in fact... I think it's good to have an edgy voice out there :)

Edgy lol. "Who cares?" isn't edgy...it's just childish and dumb.

*shrug* I tend to make the reviews of movies that I find merely mediocre -- neither good nor bad, really -- as short as possible. The really bad films often at least make an impression, and frequently make for intriguing discussion/dissection after the fact. The ones that are just in-between you can easily forget by next week, and arguably you should.

I further admit that I don't try to sound like a critic when I write reviews here. I just let my inner smartass have free reign.

Right on Spunkie, in the words of Chris Crocker:

(crying) "Leave STAIN alone !!!"

"There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." -- Oscar Wilde

I just discovered I was being discussed here, since my internet connection has been down for the last few days. For the record, I don't feel all that put-upon: in fact, when Pickpocket declared me the worst reviewer I actually laughed out loud.

Thanks to everyone who's said kind words about my writings here, or have just argued that I have a right to my own opinions. Whatever my shortcomings, I love cinema somethin' fierce, and I try to make all my contributions here good ones. My opinions may be silly, ill-informed, or even wrong... but they are mine.

Uh... cracking the human genotype. Making a film like I Served the King of England. Being so good at math that you break Enigma, and therefore likely contributing more to the Allied victory in World War II than Churchill or FDR.

Relax....

Well, all those posts you just made pretty much contradicts anything bad I thought about you.. From your reviews it's pretty hard to tell whether you're the type of person who actually has an opinion or the type of person who just likes to piss people off. Clearly not the latter. Sorry about misjudging you, I've just had too many run-ins with people like that.. ;)
