Producer of Film Resurrecting James Dean with CGI Speaks Out

Post by JSchlansky »

Finding Jack is an upcoming Vietnam war film starring a CGI recreation of James Dean. I find this personally abhorrent, so I setup an interview with the film's producer to grill him on the ethics of it.

Here is the interview:

Is CGI James Dean more or less abhorrent than presenting a very stupid parody as a genuine interview? Inquiring minds want to know.

On a deeper level, I hate how genuinely deep, interesting questions get muddled by idiots pointing-and-shrieking "this is terrible! This is garbage!" and then strawmanning or outright lying about their opponents' arguments.

We have no problem, for instance, with fictional films featuring characters who are real people, even living ones, and often horrifically slandering and misrepresenting them. That's part of the territory. So why is it wrong to feature a deceased actor in a role, especially when one has the permission of his estate and family? It's certainly odd, but I don't see any clear reason against it.

Nevermind that this has been done before, most notably in the Star Wars franchise with Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher. Why no outcry there?
